Common Email Terms Glossary
Web-based Email is an email account. It is accessed
through a Web browser (IE, Firefox, Maxthon, Opera, etc). The
advantage of web-based email is that users can access the inbox from
any computer with Internet-connection. A Web-based Email allows
access to such functions as reading, organizing, and sending
messages. Emails are stored at provider's servers, but not
downloaded to the computer. Popular Web-based Email services are
Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail.
Mail Server is a computer (with the appropriate software)
working as an MTA (mail transfer agent). Mail Servers are used to
transport mail. Email server gets emails from the email clients and
transmits it to the recipients' email client.
Email Client is an application to receive, read, store and
send email messages. The most popular email clients are Outlook
Express, the Bat!, Eudora.
Opt-in is email advertising means of sending email messages
(newsletters, ads) to those people who requested them. People
deliberately subscribe to it. It is a legitimate way to conduct
marketing campaigns via email.
Opt-in is known also as permission-based marketing.
Opt-out means that people are signed up without their
permission or knowledge to the email advertising lists. If people
don’t want to get the emails, they can request to be removed from
the lists.
